I just finished reading all of R O Lane’s Westerns and enjoyed them very much. I purchased “Big Joe” by accident in May along with Wyatt Shepard’s “The Sheriff” thinking I was buying one of R O Lane’s books.That said, I like R O Lane’s writing style much better than Shepard’s. Unlike Lane, Shepard’s book started out very slow spending very little time developing the story and characters.Big Joe Chambers was a former sheriff who received a letter of distress from his sister, Sophie that was written 18 months prior to the date he received it. Sophie lived in a town called Narrow Bluff which was not far from a town named Widestone. Colorado was mentioned by a character in the book on one occasion, so I take it those towns were in that state.At any rate, Big Joe arrives at the deserted town of Narrow Bluff and found the location of her home from his sister’s h letter, but it is burned to the ground. Searchin through the rubble, he finds a silver necklace of the Virgin Mary that his mother had given to his sister—jewelry that she never took off.Traveling to Widestone in search of information about his sister, the bartender at a local saloon referred to Widestone Sheriff Pennington and he referred Joe to the town minister, Jesse Smith who had a list of names of Narrow Bluff survivors who lived there and those that were known to be deceased. His sister and her husband, Jack Wells were among those who did not survive.The remainder of the book dealt with Joe’s mission of revenge to those responsible for his sister’s death and a developing relationship between Chambers, a widow Nancy “Nan”Riley and her young son, Will. Will’s murdered father was the sheriff before Pennington took over.The leader of the 40 something bandits that destroyed Narrow Bluffs was an evil character named Earl Gallagher.With the help of volunteers Mack and Jeanette, Big Joe was able to spot the probable location, a farm about a half mile from Widestone, where Earl and a handful of his bandits were sleeping. Joe and his only able bodied volunteers, Louis and Archie, setup an ambush at the farm, only to be attacked from behind and survived only because Milton Byers, Pennington and his predecessors deputy sheriff saved Joe’s life and helped kill or chase off Earl and part of his gang.The remainder of the book is convincing the town Mayor to replace Pennington because he was on Earl’s payroll and replacing him with Milton Byers and with preparing the town from an imminent attack by Earl and his large gang of bandits.Though less than 300 pages, this was a slow story that I forced myself to finish. Compared to all the Westerns I have read over my 71 years, this one is a little less than average.While I recommend any of R O Lane’s Westerns over this tale, I will read Wyatt Shepard’s “The Sheriff” because I already bought it and to see if it is more interesting than “Big Joe.” I've read lots of Louis L'amour and Big Joe ranks right up there with my favorites of 'ol Louis :) Classic western feel with great writing and a story that is just spot on perfect. If you love yourself a good western, you need to try Shephard's books!
